The George Washington Hotel -- A Wyndham Historic Hotel

In its heyday this 1924-vintage Colonial Revival hotel hosted Lucille Ball and other famous Apple Blossom Festival queens. Betty Crocker held an apple pie baking contest in the ballroom one year. But it fell on hard times, and in the 1970s the George Washington became an assisted living facility. After a complete renovation, it reopened in 2007 and is once again Winchester's premier hotel. Appropriately, a Gilbert Stuart portrait of the first president oversees the lobby, off which the Half Note bar sports a large mural of jazz musicians at work (it hosts the real thing on weekends). Downstairs, the Dancing Goat restaurant offers inventive American fare and outdoor seating in warm weather. You can swim around Grecian columns in the Roman bath-like indoor pool. Of the guest quarters, the "Extended King" models add a sitting area, and some of the 10 suites have fireplaces. Most units have walk-in showers with multiple-heads.
