An excellent place for a good Mediterranean restaurant (or a funky bar or eclectic shopping) is along Corydon Avenue, south of downtown across the Assiniboine River. Known as Little Italy, the area was settled by Italian immigrants and still has a continental feel, with lots of cafes and good people-watching. Many of the restaurants have outdoor courtyard seating in summer. Likewise, the Osborne Village area, just south of the Assiniboine River on Osborne Street, is another nucleus of pubs and trendy, casual restaurants. Note that most independent chef-owned restaurants are closed on Sundays, and many are closed on Monday.
Inexpensive -- The Forks Market area is filled with inexpensive food stalls and places for a quick bit to eat. Also, both the Portage Place (on Portage Ave. between Vaughan and Carlton sts.) and cityplace shopping centers (at Graham Ave. and Donald St.) have large food courts.
