The setting can't be beat. Housed in a restored 19th-century woolen mill with wonderful views of a waterfall (spotlighted at night), Simon Pearce is a collage of exposed brick, pine floorboards, and handsome wooden tables and chairs. Meals are served on Simon Pearce pottery and glassware -- if you like your place setting, you can buy it afterward at the sprawling retail shop in the mill. The atmosphere is a wonderful concoction of formal and informal, ensuring that everybody feels comfortable whether in white shirt and tie or (neatly laundered) jeans. Lunch features dishes such as shepherd's pie, beef and Guinness stew, lamb burgers, crispy calamari with field greens, or crab and cod cakes with a red pepper coulis. At dinner, look for entrees such as crispy roast duck with a mango chutney sauce, wild king salmon en croûte, or filet mignon in port wine sauce with a fig-onion compote and blue cheese butter on the side. The bread and wines are also excellent.
