Frommer's Review
Getting up here can be half the fun. Of course, the minibus is the easy way but on weekdays when the traffic is not so bad, this can be a nice stroll up the river. About halfway up the road's ascent into the peaks, go past the barracks, under the cable car, and off the road to the right. You'll find a path that comes out at a beautifully isolated waterfall, followed by the cable car station 50m (164 ft.) or so later.
The pathway has been carved into the cliff face and while there are metal guardrails, the precipice beyond can be nerve-racking. The Happy Immortals Attic is a chimney formation -- you can attempt the stairs to the top, but they were too steep for me. Views back on the walkway are spectacular. The pathway leads out over a testing suspension bridge but this is where tour groups tend to head back to their coaches, after purchasing padlocks, having them engraved, and then hanging them on the cables. My advice is to follow the path down past the teahouse and the unfortunately disused hotel. Ignore the oddly named rock formations as the signage becomes more and more bizarre, including A SIDE VIEW OF AN UPSIDE DOWN PEACOCK and DOUBLE CHICKENS CONTEND FOR HEGEMONY. Turn right, to go over the steps and past a small pagoda down to yet another locked-up guesthouse. Here you'll find an alternate route (without a ticket office) that leads down to the Long Dong Temple at the bottom of the mountain road.
