Introduction to Yellowhead Highway

It's a long 756km (470 miles) from Prince Rupert to Prince George. Even though it's possible to make the journey in 1 long day, it's far more pleasant to take it slowly, enjoy the scenery, and stop at some of the cultural sights along the way.

The route initially follows the glacier-carved Skeena River valley inland, through the industrial city of Terrace and to the Hazeltons, twin towns with a lovely river setting and an excellent First Nations cultural center. Smithers, cradled in a rich agricultural valley, is another scenic spot, and the most pleasant place along the route to spend a night. Between Burns Lake and Fort Fraser is a series of long, thin lakes, famed for trout angling and rustic fishing resorts.
