When silver ore was discovered in the mountains above Yuscarán at the end of the 17th century, a boom occurred in the little town that lasted nearly 100 years. While the days of wealth are long gone, the colonial core of the town, most notably the cobblestone square and whitewashed houses, remains intact and provides a quick getaway for a day or two from the chaos that is the capital.
