Frommer's Review
This country mansion is one of the finest privately owned homes in Croatia. It was built in the 17th century and underwent a complete restoration and conversion into a hotel from 1990 to 1999 after serving as an orphanage, a farm, a furniture shop, and a meat-processing plant. In its current incarnation, Dvorac Bezanec is a one-of-a-kind hotel with everything from tennis courts and hot-air balloon rides to archery and a small deer park. Except for the magnificent open-air courtyard, which is used for dining (the hotel's Bezanec Restaurant is excellent) and special events, the hotel's offbeat public rooms are chockablock with the owner's collection of Croatian artifacts and furniture, all of which coexist in planned clutter that spans the years since the hotel was built. The most current -- and most impressive -- display is made up of hundreds of original paintings and drawings (many of them naive art and all of it for sale). Guest rooms look like boudoir sets from a 1930s German movie and seem out of sync with the very modern bathrooms, but the effect is museum-chic. Bezanec is not for everyone, but it can be an acquired taste for those who want to experience Croatian kitsch.
