The 105m (345-ft.) twin spires of this magnificent Gothic structure seem perpetually covered with scaffolding, and its entrance is hidden behind a tarp. Work began on the cathedral's exterior in 1990 and is ongoing. But despite the dust and mess, the grace and beauty of this Herman Bollé masterpiece shines as a symbol of Zagreb. Inside, the cathedral glows following a refurbishment that was completed in 1988. Note the 18th-century marble pulpit by Slovenian sculptor Mihael Cussal and the sarcophagus of the controversial Blessed Alojzije Stepinac behind the main altar. A beautiful Mestrovic relief showing Stepanic kneeling before Christ nearby marks the Croatian priest's grave.
