The best choice in town is the recently renovated, two-star Zhangmu Binguan (tel. 0892/874-2221), located on the right-hand side just before the border. It's got clean bathrooms (with hot water 9:30-11:30pm) and two restaurants. Rooms go for ¥380 to ¥400 ($49-$52/£25-£26). Foreign visitors are also drawn to the Gangyen Hotel, opposite the Zhangmu Binguan at Duo er Ji Gang Lin 280 (Gangjian Binguan; tel. 0892/874-2323; ¥150/$20/£9.75 standard room without bathroom, ¥300/$39/£20 standard room with bathroom). The lower floors are a little damp, so ask for a room on the sixth floor -- these are brighter and have large windows. The Himalaya Restaurant, near Zhangmu Binguan (tel. 0892/874-3068), is pricey, but a nice place to relax before and after a trip to Nepal. The fresh yogurt and fried noodles with yak meat were delicious. The owners also offer decent exchange for Chinese yuan, Nepalese rupees, and American dollars. A meal for two is about ¥80 to ¥100 ($10-$13/£5.20-£6.50).
