Direct night train from Vienna to Venice?

by Pauline Frommer »

I don't know off-hand, but if you go to the website www.seat61.com you'll find your answer there. You can easily buy tickets in advance (and you should for berths) at www.raileurope.com Have a wonderful trip!

I agree with the recommendation for seat61.com, but not with RailEurope, which has several strikes against it (doesn't list all trains and discounts, often has higher fares than on the rail systems' own sites, even though it's owned by SNCF).

On the other hand, Mark Smith, the Man in Seat 61, does not sell tickets, but for each itinerary he advises well on the best way and place to buy. His knowledge is so specific that I just saved over 20€ a ticket by following his recommendation to buy Vienna-to-Prague from the Czech rail operator and not from the Austrian!

My husband, 7y/o son and I would like to take a night train from Vienna to Venice. Is there a direct one? What "type" of tickets should we buy so we can sleep in? What's a good website to buy these tickets from? We are in the US right now and I assume we should reserve these tickets ahead of time.

Thanks!
