Komodo National Park: Beware ofmen asking you to change USD to rupiah

by pinky »

A visit to Komodo to see the "dragons" is a good experience.   The rangers can take you on a two hour walk to see not only the dragons, but other wildlife, see medicinal plants, etc.

BUT, what I want to mention is to be VERY careful when a local asks you to change  the USD they received from selling souvenirs to Indonesia rupiah. They plead, beg and follow you saying that there are no banks where they can change money.   Then when you feel that it would be nice to do them a favor, they show you the right amount, but when you go into your purse to get the rupiah, they substitute $1 bills for the larger denominations.   They give you the money folded, so you only see one of the larger bills on top.  Others start badgering you right away so you don't take the time to check the money.

I think the best tactic is to stay away from the souvenir area - as everything that is there can be bought in Bali, probably cheaper.
