There are tours you can take, though they're pretty pricey. A friend took one she liked through Insight Cuba. You may want to look into it. But I totally agree with you: we should be able to travel to Cuba freely. It's nuts there's still this embargo!!

Totally, totally agree! The restriction on traveling to Cub is beyond ridiculous. I'll be watching this board to suggestions on the best way to go there, as I've been long intrigued wiht the idea of going.

Yes, there are authorized people-to-people cultural tours offered, and most are pricey. Some folks travel via 3rd country gateways like Canada, Mexico, the Bahamas, or pretty much any other country not bound by antiquated travel restrictions.

As a side note, the restriction is not against travel, it's actually a Treasury Department law against US citizens spending any money in Cuba...

You can come here to England. Get an All Inclusive Vacation to Cuba for 2 weeks.

Pay the English Tour Operator under $1000 US. incl Flights

Typical Hotel Accomodation in Cuba

You dont need to spend a cent when you get there !

All Inclusive.

Cuba wont stamp your Passport.

And you'll get a pleasant surprise when you see how many Americans are already there !

The Police leave tourists alone. No Crime or Drugs. No traffic.

Nicest people you could wish to meet !

Typical Cuban Beach - 85'f in Winter

Many groups with cultural, religious, educational, or humanitarian connections can get licenses for group travel to Cuba.

I went with a group from the Episcopal Church in Minnesota, which has a diocese-to-diocese relationship with the Episcopal Church in Cuba. Later, one of the Episcopal schools in Minnesota sent a group of students there. Other people I know have gone on trips sponsored by Quaker meetings or UCC churches.

If you're not religious, cultural institutions can get licenses, too. I know someone who went on a tour sponsored by the Philadelphia Art Museum, and the curated film series, Talk Cinema, sponsors tours to the Havana Film Festival.

In addition, if you're over 55, you're eligible to take the Cuba tours sponsored by Elderhostel/Road Scholar.

A lot of the tourism to Cuba centers on Varadero, which is a beautiful beach resort, but not the real Cuba at all. I found that little English was spoken, even in some facilities that cater to foreign tourists, so my long-ago high school Spanish got a workout. However, people were friendly and did their best to communicate.

If you're into the arts, I recommend trying to get in to see the National Ballet of Cuba (tickets were $25 for tourists, much less for Cubans) and the National Museum of Cuban Art.

One caution: The last night we were there, our group had a farewell dinner in a slightly downscale restaurant. I had a mojito, while my neighbor, who ordered exactly the same meal, had a beer. (Even Cubans don't drink the tap water.) I got sick, presumably from the ice, and my neighbor didn't.
