Which tour company is best for Cuba

by sarahv »

So, I understand that Americans can't go there without a company that possesses a special license. Wondering if anyone knows the difference between Insight Cuba and Road Scholar, both of which are now offerring Cuba tours. If anyone can weight in, I'd be most grateful.

Insight is one of the pioneers in this sort of travel and has an excellent reputation. That being said, Road Scholar (formerly ElderHostel, so you'll be traveling with an older crowd), is also very well-regarded and significantly cheaper to Cuba, if I'm remembering correctly. I don't think you can go wrong with either.

Cordially,

Pauline

I visited Cuba Feb 2012 basically on my own. Flew to Cayman for one night. lFew to Cuba next day. Stayed in old Havana at Los Frailles hotel. Nice but old.  Other hotels available in area try Went on one outside tour to valley and did one old havana tour but mostly just walked around. People very plesant and helpful.  Not much people bothering me for money.  I used Euros for converting. I spent time finding hotels on web many sites. I spent 4 days could have spent a week in Old havana.

I used cubavac@candw.ky based in Grand Cayman.  Everything went well.  Slight problem in arriving at airport.  No one was there to pick me up .  I went into the departure  teminal and they helped me.  All worked out.  I liked being on my own. You can hire a local guide when you are there.  Tours that leave from USA are very controlled from what I have heard like most escorted tours. Being on your own you get a better feel for the country. People friendly.  I never had had any apprehension walking around the streets of Old havana.

I would go alone, construct a tour by myself. There are few options, even for booking hotels online for Cuba.

I don't think it's a bad idea to travel alone without a touring company. You'll get to see a lot more than they'd show you.
