Language Immersion Travel?

by kflannery »

Can anyone recommend a short term (2-4 week) Spanish language immersion program abroad?  I am looking for classes our entire family could participate in that would also allow plenty of time for exploring.  I am open to almost any destination for the right program.

Believe it or not, there are really great language classes in Antigua, Guatemala. They're very reasonably priced, the city is beautiful and the teachers are first rate. You'll have a number of schools to pick from there (the one I went to was really good, though I hear it's now either out of business or has changed its name. I went about five years ago).

I can second that advice re Antigua, the city less than an hour from Guatemala City and its international airport  (NOT the Caribbean destination by the same name!).

I know people who have done that and they are very much satisfied. The families where you stay are used to having these "student" guests, you're well loked after, the one-on-one tuition works wonders, and if you can refrain from ganging up with English-speaking others during your free time, you'll learn a lot. So it's up to you to make the most of it while there.

A brilliant location for a language immersion course would be Granada in Andalucia. It is a beautiful and historic city with so much to see!

I personally went to a language school called Escuela Delengua which had courses available for all ability levels and you could choose the length and intensity of your course. Furthermore I received help from Delengua to get affordable accommodation for my 4 week stay which was extremely helpful!

I cannot recommend Granada enough as a city for language immersion and there was so much culture to enjoy such as flamenco, the Alhambra and of course free tapas! Delengua arranges weekly activities so you can really get the most out of your stay!

If you are interested in taking a language course, visit www.delengua.es
