Watch out for DCC at ATMs (Yes, now the banks are trying it!)

by Captain Larry »

In Italy, Sicily, specifically, we were told that in order to exchange currency in either a bank or a cambio a passport was required. That is pure hearsay since I only use ATMs. I was on one occassion asked for a photo ID to support the use of a credit card for a purchase. I think I might have been able to talk my way out of that but it was easier to just produce the passport and go on my way.

Posted by Captain Larry[/QUOTE]If they generically asked for photo ID I'd produce my driver's license, but OTOH every hotel in Germany and Switzerland over the past 2 weeks asked for and made photocopies of passports for both of us.

Regarding DCC, it was customary for me to be asked (via the card reader terminal) which currency I wanted the charge to be run in.  The exchange rate used was shown but it was the reciprocal of what I was familiar with (e.g., 0.917 CHF/$ rather than $1.09/CHF) so I always opted for the local currency.

Opting for local currency is a good plan. Since I started looking at this, and in following other reports, I have NEVER found an instance of the rate offered at DCC (and it's most often not displayed) being as favorable or more favorable than the rate for that day used by the banks.
