Beer Lover going to Prague. What's a great authentic bar?

by DRichardson »

I'd love to go to a historic place, with lots of atmosphere and a wide range of beers to try. Any advice? Thanks!

You'd better wait until you get there and ask a local (and NOT the concierge at your hotel who will be beholden...). If you ask here you get responses from tourists - if you ask there, you get responses from locals. "Authentic" would have to be a place where there is hardly a tourist, so there's the problem right there.

To go see where and how the real Budweiser beer (not the American swill) is brewed (in the town of Budweis or Ceské Budejovice), find tips here: http://www.outsideprague.com/ceske_budejovice/budvar_budweiser_brewery_tours.html

And the same goes for the town of Plzen (from where the term "Pilsener" comes):

Prosit!

tha above website is great for info on all things beer related in Prague, great list of pubs breweries and micro-breweries.The more traditional pubs will only offer 2 or 3 beers  but there are many more multi tap pubs about these days. I have been travelling to Prague for over 23 years now and have seen the beer scene change quite dramtically over that time.

Lots of great micro-breweries around and I tend to spend my time in these places or  in pubs in the less toursity areas of the city I usually stay in the Dejvice area of the city where there are numerous great bars.

lets me know where you are staying and I can try and recommend  a few places in that area.

I am back in Prague in early August though I am going to be working most of the time and back again in the middle of October and hopefully I won't be working too much then.

mquartz: Calling American Budweiser "swill" is an insult to swill-makers everywhere.

Bamberg, Germany has quite a lot of interesting, old breweries.  It is a wonderful beer center.  Beer consumption is so high there, that one of the nicknames is "The town of pregnant men."  I haven't been there in quite a few years, so I hope its breweries haven't gone too touristy.

To the swill-makers of this world I can only say Oink Oink

I was just in Poland (Krakow and Warsaw) and had fantastic beers, the names of which I only at first bothered to take note of, after sampling a few different ones at random I gave up on that - they were all soooo good.

I'll go back with a connoisseur buddy of mine and do "serious research", maybe I'll post a few names here in the future, but it is really not necessary. Reach into the cooler vitrine, close your eyes, grab something, and you're good to go.
