Best time to visit the Galapagos

by bwasiczko »

We are thinking of going to the Galapagos in April or June of 2014. We are interested in sight seeing and not water activities.  Are either of those times better?

Go in April. Most definitely! June is high season, so it's much more expensive and crowded.

Hi bwasiczako,

While the Galapagos is a true year round destination, there is a difference between going to the islands in April or June. There are basically two seasons in the Galapagos. The garua season starts in June and usually lasts through the fall and sometimes into December. The garua is characterized by a low laying cloud layer that forms over the larger islands in the morning, which typically burns off in the afternoon. The garua is a good time to visit the Galapagos if you want to avoid the strong equatorial sun. The temperatures are warm enough for you to walk around in shorts and t-shirt most of the time but the cloud cover cuts down somewhat on the intensity of the sun (but you still must wear sun protection). Mornings can be a bit chillier, sometimes calling for a sweatshirt or light fleece jacket. Water temperatures get somewhat colder as the garua progresses, but the average water temperature in the Galapagos only varies by 5 degrees year round.

In December or prior, the garua ends and the skies clear as the new season begins. Water temperatures get progressively warmer as a result. In late April and early May it can get warm enough to feel muggy with occasional brief showers. The water is the warmest at this time of year, as the seasons once again turn back toward the garua in June. June is the transition so the start of the garua and ending of the non-garua.

Even if you never set foot in the water you can have an amazing time in the Galapagos. You literally have to watch where you are walking so as not to step on animals in the trail at times and you will find that  there are many friendly and exotic creatures to greet you on the terrestrial side of things including land iguanas, marine iguanas, giant tortoise, sea lions, fur seals, and a large assortment of bird life including blue footed, red footed and Nazca boobies, frigate birds, tropic birds, waved albatross and more. If you can coax yourself to go snorkeling you have another world of wonder waiting for you beneath the surface that includes sea lions, penguins, sea turtles, iguanas a myriad of tropical fish and even dolphin waiting for you.

Hope this helps!
