Interested in going to Tikal

by Harold »

Is it better to do so from Belize or Guatemala. I know that it's in Guatemala, but wondering if it makes more sense to simply duck into the country from Belize, for safety reasons. Thanks.

I combined going to Tikal with a trip to Belize.  I stayed near San Ignacio and did a day trip from there to Tikal and returned that same day.  It was too much driving, but I had been told that and didn't really factor it in.  In hindsight, I would have spent one or two nights in Guatemala and then return to Belize.  It is great though and I strongly recommend Tikal.  My trip was a nice combination of Belize's coast and then the Maya sites there before going to Guatemala for the grand finale at Tikal.

I agree with Arsenaljob. Spend a few days in Guatemala. It really is a fascinating place and Tikal can get really hot and humid, so you want to explore it in the early morning and late afternoon hours, breaking for a dip at your hotel pool in between. Antigua, Chichicastanengo and Lake Atitlan are other magical places to visit in Guatemala.

Cordially,

Just to add to the chorus, Tikal is an immense and impressive site and I highly recommend a night or two in Tikal or nearby El Remanso or Flores.

Both Belize (western Cayo area) and Guatemala itself are popular and easy gateways to Tikal.
