Suggestions for 6 days in Eastern/Central Europe (Hungary/around there)

by sndraco »

Hi

I will be working in Budapest from Tuesday June 2nd night through Thursday night June 4th. Can arrive on Sat May 31st and leave on Monday June 8th, so besides work will have about 5.5 days left for sightseeing vacation etc.

Asking for suggestions of other places to visit either in Hungary or Central Europe. I have been to Vienna for 4 days, Budapest for 3, Lake Bled for 2 and also visited Prague, Krakow, Sarajevo, Mostar and the coast of Croatia before.

My thoughts are use the days to travel around hungary and visit other places there, or possibly go to Slovakia or Romania or northern Serbia (seems like the places that are close by). Of course given that I could fly if needed can extend a bit further too.

Suggestions appreciated, for places to visit (any can't miss places) beyond Budapest. and also transportation suggestions (I am comfortable driving in Europe, have done so in Croatia, France, England etc)

Yes Bratislava would be something different for you then since it's really close by and has (or used to have) a bus transit there.  There is also a train connection from Budapest (forget if it was Kelti station or not).  If you have access to a car, there are the caves in Hundary/Slovakian border that are supposed to be really cool (if you are into that).  Also I hear Debrecan/Košice are also cool places to see as well.  Though not sure when you were going, but there used to be some music festivals in Košice.  As for Romania, I haven't been to the north part, but Sibiu might be an option, though that might take up most your time just driving there and back.

Since you've mentioned where you have gone you could do a circle route to Bratislava, up to Nove Mesto (?achtice Castle is very close there or the ruins of it at least) and then make your way over to Košice and down though the Aggtelek National Park just on the border of Hungary and Slovakia not far from Košice where the caves are.

Another option (thought not sure it would be as much to do is driving down to Novi Sad in Serbia if you wish to go there then heading over to Timi?oara and over to Sibiu  (which I believe there are some interesting things there, but could have gotten that confused with Sibiu (I only made to F?g?ra? in that area) and then up to Cluj to Debrecan and maybe still making the caves in the Aggtelek National Park.

Prorbaly don't want to fly anywhere with 5.5 days, unless you really want to spend the airport time, but you could just fly out to Burgas (Sunny Beach) in Bulgaria if they have direct flights from Budapest and they have day trips from Sunny Beach to Istanbul as well as 5 days in Sunny Beach is overkill, but with the flight time and transportation and the day trip to Istanbul, that might fill up the time as well.

  Just some of my ideas...

Trip will be split 3 days on each side, so likely rent a car at least one of the 3 days. The caves in Hungary sound interesting.

In that case if it's split, the caves and maybe even Debrecan/Košice would work for at least one of the 3 day trips.  Plus it's a national park so there's a bunch of other things there to do outdoors as well if you are into that...
