My mother was all set to go to Chicago, but now is worrying about crime

by johnturner »

And she has me worrying too. Apparently, the city has the highest murder rate in the country right now. I'm wondering: is the entire city dangerous? Or just certain areas? I visited about 5 years ago, felt very safe and really loved it, so I recommended it to her and her friend. Now am feeling guilty! Anybody have insight? Any Chicagoans out there?

You know, Chicago does have bad crime statistics. But the truth is, the crime is taking place (mostly) in areas that tourists never visit. So I would let your mother know she doesn't need to worry.

Please tell your mother there's nothing to worry about. Chicago is no more dangerous than other large US cities.

Chicago is having a horrific summer with more murders than any other city in the US. I doubt your mother would be in the areas where these crimes are taking place, but she may have reason to be worried. I'm not sure I'd go there right now. A real shame.

I have lived an hour north of Chicago my entire life, visit the city almost every weekend and have never heard a gunshot. Yes, the crime is bad in certain areas/neigborhoods. However your mother, or any tourist for that matter, would have no reason to travel there in the first place. These areas are concentrated on the South Side and the West side. All of the the museums, shopping, restaurants and entertainment venues that would be of interest are in Downtown and walking distance from a Metra station. Destinations that are a bit further can be reached by a taxi or a bus (really cheap). Please tell your mother not to worry and to have fun! You are no more likely to encounter crime in the downtown/magnificent mile area than you are in any other major city.
