Travel to tokyo

by paweber »

We've taken four family trips to Tokyo over the years. We really enjoy the city. Read some guidebooks, including Frommers, to get ideas on what to see and do in Tokyo.

You can access the Frommers guidebook on this site for free.  It has suggested trips.

I personally prefer Kyoto to Tokyo. More history, a little less frenetic. You also should head to Kamakura and Nara while you're in country if you can.

Tokyo and Kyoto are both very interesting--and very different from each other.  We enjoyed both of them very much.  Kyoto is much more laid back.  Tokyo has a lot more to do.  Both are excellent destinations.

We also liked our visit to the Takayama/Shirakawa-go/Japanese Alps area very much.

Tokyo is an itneresting place, but very crowded.

It depends on what your family likes. It's a hypermodern concrete, glass and steel jungle.

Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ginza, Yoyogi Park, Akihabara, the Sky Tree, the Tokyo Tower, the imperial palace are great places, but you could also travel across to see Yokohama. Very beautiful at night, in the evening.

Tokyo is the largest city. Maybe I'll find out sightseeing landmarks in this city.

Most people go to visit Tokyo as well as the Kansai (Osaka/Kyoto/Nara/Kobe) areas. But there is far more in Japan than just there. Kyoto and Nara were both former capitals, and are the cultural jewels of the country. That said, if you are already seeing Tokyo, you can largely skip Osaka in the daytime, which is mostly just a clone. Far better would be to see Kyoto, Nara, Himeji Castle (Japan's finest), and if time allows, Hikone Castle and Koyasan. Osaka has some good night life; in fact Dotonbori at night is a must. The night views from the Umeda Sky Bldg and Abeno Harukas Bldg are spectacular.

Your trip should be defined by your interests, of course, but IMHO 3 days in Tokyo are about enough, together with some excellent day trips in the area such as Nikko, Kamakura/Enoshima, Hakone, the Fuji 5 Lakes area, Karuizawa, Kusatsu, and Izu. A JR Kanto Area Pass would also save you lots of money.
