Is it worth it to see the Flint Hills area? We do enjoy hiking nad bird watching. Thanks for any advice.

What is your overall route? I ask because possibly the most interesting part of the Flint Hills is in northern Oklahoma (between Hewins, Kansas and Pawhuska, Oklahoma). I passed through the area almost 40 years ago when it was still active ranch land, but the miles of tall grasses were an incredible sight. What makes the area unique is that the rocky soil makes the area not good wheat or corn land, so it was never plowed and is one of the few, if not the only, area of original prairie land in the U.S.

I was thinking of the area last year because a friend moved near there, and found that the biggest ranch in that area has now become the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve. The cattle are gone, and bison have been re-introduced; there are hundreds of them there, and apparently quite commonly seen from--or on--the roads through the preserve.

We haven't really put together a route. But seeing real prairie land sounds very appealing. We gotta get this together soon!
