Mammoth Cave National Park

by paweber »

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. If you are in the area it is worth a visit. I spent an afternoon at MCNP while in Nashville on business, driving over on a whim on a weekend just to get out of Nashville for a while. I took the Niagara tour which was enough for me; we have several cave systems here in Northern California so I didn't feel too compelled to spend additional money on more cave tours.

There are many different tours to choose from at various prices and ability levels. Summer is the busiest time of year; winter is slow and there can be snow on the ground. The caves maintain a year around temperature of 54F (12.2C) so most visitors wear a sweater or sweatshirt.

It is an easy albeit somewhat boring 90 minute drive from Nashville via I-65.

Kentucky's Mammoth Cave National Park is a place that is on my 'to do' list.  If anyone has been there, I'd like to hear your comments on it.   Also, is there a 'best time' of the year to go?

That's good info, especially the heads up to bring a sweater. Thanks.

A sweater in a cave is always a good idea.  Of the many caves I have visited, I have only known one - The Caverns of Sonora - in which the interior air temperature was warmer than the outside air temperature.

Another useful item for cave visits is a set of binoculars.

The lenses gather extra light and allow you to see details that are not obvious - such as "flying" straight up to the ceilings to really study the beautiful  untouched crystals that cling there.

You do not know what you are missing until you view a cave in this way.  Binoculars also allow you to see down long dark passages or into recesses that are otherwise restricted.

For me, every cave  is different.  I just returned from Malta and Sicily, where I had the pleasure of spending time in a number of different caves of historical, natural, and cultural interest.

Happy Caving

Yes, I've found a sweater to be useful too. I've been in caves before, though I haven't been in the Mammoth Cave.  I also find good 'stable' shoes that won't cause you to slip to be very useful.

Go in the early fall to avoid the crowds, but still have great weather. What an amazing place. Definitely a good bucket list destination.
