Tell me about the rest?

by drobert360 »

My only visit to Estonia was via cruise ship, a single day visit. We essentially only had time for the Tallinn old city and a bit of the new. We enjoyed this port of call. With a population of only 1.3 million (approx) the countryside is not densely populated. Has anyone been beyond the capital city ... I would enjoy hearing about the highlights of the rest of the country.

I spent several days in Tallinn and Pärnu to the south.  I really liked Tallinn's old town much more than a lot of other countries. In fact it just seemed to have much more to do and also seemed pretty decent sized for such a smaller city.

Pärnu is the resort town on the Gulf of Riga.  Spent 2 or 3 nights there last year and it was ok.  It was right before the big June tourist season, so the outdoor beer pubs on the beach were just being set up and the nightlife wasn't quite happening when I was there.  It was decent weather, but I found it hard to amuse myself for that long just wandering around town.  I was hoping for a big nightlife scene, but I was just there too early...

Thank you for the input ... I was wondering if the country is too low keyed. How were the basics in Pärnu (hotels, food, sights)?

Estonia was easy to get around.  Basics in Pärnu were about the same as in Tallinn.  Hotels though on the beach aren't too many, so that you may want to get reservations well in advance if you go in the summer.  The main downtown is pretty small, there's a few streets with restaurants and pubs, but there just wasn't a whole lot of them (which you might think for a resort town there would be more than there was).

Beach walking was fine, the hotel zone beach isn't that big (topless part is to the west near the huge rock jetty) and the east gets pretty desolate as there is a grassland/swampland and forests.  There are paths off the beach you can take, but there's really no much other than that in that direction.

I really didn't find a lot to do when I was there at the end of May.  I think once the summer rush comes in, there would be a lot more nightlife (there are some clubs, but aren't really open until June) that looked like fun...
