which hotel and location is recommended for a couple for four nights in August in New Orleans?

by elinda »

we are driving to New Orleans in August, and plan to stay for four days; all previous trips have been to business conferences with an extra day or two for sightseeing. we have stayed at the New Orleans Marriott, Le Meridien and Sheraton on those occasions. We want to be near the French quarter but not necessarily in it. I certainly do not want to be where all the noise is.

This is a sightseeing trip (although we may wish to cool off in the pool, and have a leisurely brunch). in the past we have eaten brunch at Windsor Court (CBD), Commanders Palace (Garden District) and Brennans. We have also eaten at Antoines, Arnauds, Galatoire's, Cafe du Monde, and a few other restaurants. Where is a recommended restaurant for Crepes Suzette? What other restaurants are recommended?

We plan to go to the Audobon Aquarium, French Market, Jackson Square, St. Louis Cathedral, Preservation Hall, New Orleans Art museum, (maybe Louisiana State museum, Historic New Orleans Collection, Gallier House, Musical Legends Park, Riverwalk, Bayou Wildlife Refuge, Besthoff Sculpture gardens, Jean Lafite Histoic Park, Ogden museum of southern art, Presbytere).

I want to be either in French Quarter or CBD (Central Business District), not in Garden District

Thank you for your suggestions.

Staying in the Quarter allows you to walk or take the streetcar wherever you'd want to go. Look for a hotel within these confines: Canal Street, Burgundy Street, Esplanade Ave, and Decatur Street. This will keep you safe and centrally located - but remember to keep your wits about you wherever you are in New Orleans! And if you want to avoid most of the noise, stay on Chartres, Royal, Dauphine or Burgundy (not Bourbon or Decatur).   If you do stay in the Quarter, we recommend the Hotel Monteleone. The Carousel Bar is iconic, and it's right across the street from some amazing antique/vintage shops (like ours!)

I'm doing some research for a friend getting married mid-dec.  They want to go someplace warmer than NY but not far where they can relax, do some sightseeing, good restaurants, history, etc.   I love New Orleans but have never been there in winter.  Would it be a good honeymoon place for a couple in their 50's in dec? They are both relativey untraveled & they didn't want the caribbean.     I also thought of Charleston.   Any t houghts? Suggestions?  Romantic hotels? Things to do around christmas-time? Romantic hotel recommendations?   thanks!

I think New Orleans is GREAT in December. Still temperate, and they have special "Reveillon" dinners and concerts in Jackson Square going on in honor of the Xmas holidays. It's a terrific time to go there. They could also head to the Caribbean: prices will be at their nadir in mid-December (they'll pop up again for Christmas). Hope this helps. Many congratulations to your friend.
