Heading to DC. Should I add on a day or two in Baltimore?

by John C Lee »

I've been to Washington a number of times over the years and was thinking I'd check out Baltimore. Love them crabcakes! Should I do it or stick to DC? What's there to see and do in Baltimore?

Yes, please do come to Baltimore!

The city is in the midst of celebrating the War of 1812 and if you are a history fan, Fort McHenry and the Maryland Historical Society museum are musts. And there's so much else to see.

Baltimore's restaurants keep getting better and you'll find a crab cake in all of them (well, most.)

A lot of people think of the Inner Harbor when they think of Baltimore. It's home to the National Aquarium (order tickets on line before you come) and Harborplace (really a waterfront shopping center). For a good Baltimor experience, head to Fells Point and take a walking tour or the ridiculous Urban Pirate cruise, visit the shops, have a drink and a crab cake in one of the local taverns.

The Orioles are pretty hot this year and fans are hoping for the best.

If art is your thing, the Walters has some great exhibits and is a short walk from the Inner Harbor. There are also museums celebrating African-American history, historic ships and houses, science, the Star Spangled Banner, the Civil War, sports and comic books.

Have I convinced you yet? Come to think of it, I haven't started on the nightlife, or the boats, or the tours... There's lots going on in Charm City

Yes, go to Baltimroe just for the food! Really underrated city, with some great sites (including the Fort where the Star Spangled banner was written) and some good museums. I was really surprised by how much I liked Baltimore the one time I visited. And we had some wonderful seafood while there.
