Does it make sense to do a day trip to Monaco from Nice?

by PHeymont »

As far as "too touristy," it probably already was when Grace arrived (I believe you can get the "documentary" Wedding in Monaco from Netflix).

But it is certainly easy to do it from Nice as a day trip; there are regularly-scheduled buses and trains all day, and the schedules are for about a 30-minute trip. Of course, if you plan to spend a late evening at the Casino or such, overnight might make sense.

Or should I plan an overnight visit there? I was a fan of Princess Grace, so am intrigued about going, but wonder if its gotten too touristy?

A day trip is great and other places like Nice or  Menton are usually much cheaper to overnight in.

The Casino is very small but worth a look.Might depend on what time of year you go but I didn't find Monaco as touristy as other places.

We went on a tour though it was really quite independent.   It left Nice around 5:00PM and returned around 11:00PM or so.   It was just breathtaking riding up the winding roads and seeing the huge yachts right at dusk with the lights coming on and the outlines being so distinct.   When we got to Monaco, we were given an authorization through the tour to a meal each at a particular restaurant and we could go whenever we wanted.   So, we went into the casino a while first and then to dinner and back to the casino.   The restaurant was very nice.   I was so impressed with the cleanliness of Monaco.   There wasn't a piece of trash anywhere that I saw and every bush was perfectly manicured.   In the roundabout just outside the casino there is a statue and a nice lighted area were many people were taking photos.   It was really a lot of fun and though we didn't get to ride through the whole principality, it was enough, really.    The tour guide said Bon Jovi has a mega home there but, of course, we didn't see him.

Carroline says , "I was so impresed with the cleanliness of Monaco",  Well, when you think of it, why shouldn't it be clean?  It is the size of a large handkerchief  and it has pots of money from gambling and tourism to keep the place beautiful for its super-wealthy residents and visitors.

That's true, Arion, it is small, but then we've all seen small places that weren't pristine too, haven't we.  I agree though that I don't think they would be making as much money at the casinos if it weren't clean. But then, Las Vegas never let that stop them and I've never found LV to be clean.  On the other hand Baden Baden was rather clean though it's in a larger country.   smiley Oh, my, this is so difficult to figure out.   LOL

Caroline.... the original OP was asking about overnighting or not in Monaco. Why in the world did you go off on this tangent:

"On the other hand Baden Baden was rather clean though it's in a larger country."

Baden-Baden is quite a distance from Monaco. Are you recommending the OP stay there instead?

I overnighted in Monaco at the Hotel Hermitage. we had a delighful room with a balcony overlooking the Mediterranean.

Smiley faces are idiotic, best left to those unable to form sentences. Also, they have nothing to do with the OP's question, and it appears you have no regard for direct answers.
