Cruise to Nova Scotia, etc.

by Rita Paul »

Would love to see Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, etc.  Is there any cruise this summer (2013) that I could take from New York City area?  Alternatively, what companies do land tours (I do not want to travel independently)?

The vast majority of cruises from NYC up the coast to Canada start in the fall, though there are a few Carnival sailings before then. Look at a site like VacationsToGo.com or CruisesOnly.com to suss out your options.

Your time in port will be short on those sailings, so if you really want to explore those areas and want to do it with a tour, try Caravan Tours or Globus Tours.

The port time question is important. We did a Carnival cruise from New York a few years ago; Halifax was the turnaround point. The time allowed us basically a choice between exploring Halifax (nice place, obsessed with Titanic, not all that interesting) and renting a car to drive across and see the Bay of Fundy tides (without enough time to watch a change).

Holland America has many cruises this summer, mainly from Boston.  My wife and I just booked a 14 day cruise which sails from Boston to Quebec Ciyt, and then back to Boston.  The itinerary also stops in Halifax, Sydney, and Charlottetown, However, the stops are short, but our back-to-back, 7 day cruises will allow us to stop twice in each port, and also spend 3 days in Quebec City.

A few years ago, my wife and I caught a ferry from Maine, which allowed us to take our own car.  It's a great way to see Nova Scotia.  We spent some time in Mahone Bay, which usually has a Wooden Ship Festival every summer around August.  It's a lot of fun.  Also, visit Lunenberg, and Peggy's Cove.  All of the places I just mentioned are just below Halifax.
