Heading to Ixtapa and have to fly through Mexico City

by Darren Kap »

Wondering if we should make a vacation of both of them? Or do the colonail cities around Mexico City if Mexico City itself is too dangerous. We haven't yet booked the ticket but it looks like all the flights stop in Mexico City, so we thought we'd add some culture into the beachy mix. Any suggestions?

At a minimum, in my opinion, Mexico City is worth at least a three day visit. Look at possible itineraries here on Frommers website and also go online and search for Hemisphere Magazine's "Three Perfect Days in Mexico City" article to get more ideas.

Also read through the "sticky" posts on this bulletin board.

Take the same precautions you would in visiting any North American city, stay in the tourist zones, and you should be just fine during your visit to Mexico City.

While on the Pacific coast in Ixtapa it's not a good idea to go outside of the greater Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo area. The cities are located in the Mexican state of Guerrero which unfortunately has seen more than its share of narco-violence. I wouldn't worry about it at all in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo but if you have any ideas about renting a car and going off exploring on your own outside the cities I would strongly advise against that.

Wanted to report back and thank PA Weber. We took your advice and did 3 days in Mexico City and absolutely loved it! What a fascinating place. While Ixtapa was lovely, there's no real culture there, so we appreciated what we got to see first in Mexico City. Thanks again!

Thanks for taking the time to report back. Mexico City is an often overlooked destination by many and I'm glad you took the time to discover why it is one of the most historical and important cities in North America.
