Help needed to for suggestions to other parts of france for one week in beginning of January

by vanessateoh »

Hi

We are family of four with two sons (18 & 21), we are planning to visit Paris after Christmas and thereafter ventured out of Paris.  We read itinerary of others about South of France,Provence, Nice and Monaco and  Loire Valley.  However, we are travelling in January which is winter and is it advisable to drive in winter road condition? We will need to rely on public transport if it is not advisable to drive.

Could someone give me some advice and suggestions for places that we should go in winter?  We do not want to ski nor visit vineyards.

I would take the train from Paris to Nice and then visit the French Riviera. Though it's known as a summer resort area today, this actually was the place where many from Russia and northern Europe used to spend the winter, as the weather is so temperate. Though you won't be able to swim, the museums should be open, as will many historic sights, but you won't be battling crowds in January.
