Is South Africa a good place to go for a safari?

by JPasternack »

I've always wanted to see Cape Town (Robbin Island primarily), so I was thinking this might be a good chance to do both a city visit and a safari. But friends were telling me about their Kenya safari, so now I'm confused. Suggestions????

I've been on safari in Tanzania (bordering Kenya) and Southern Africa (visited South Africa but did our safaris in Botswana).  Both were great experiences.

Cape Town is a wonderful city well worth visiting for 4 days or so.  Robbin Island tells a great story, but there are many great things to see and do in the city itself, like its' great waterfront and Table Mountain.   But there are no good game reserves here.  The better game parks in South Africa are north and east, like Kruger.

Consider going on a trip, like we did, that covers visits to Cape Town, Safari in Botwsana (the Okavanga Delta and Chobe National Park), and a visit to Victoria Falls (straddling Zambia and Zimbabwe).

But I also know you would enjoy a trip to Eastern Africa (especially during the million animal migration).  So maybe try one now, and in 5 or so years do the other.

I agree with DrFumblefinger that Kruger/Sabi Sands in South Africa and Chobe or Okavanga in Botswana are absolutely wonderful.   We went two years ago and the experience far exceeded our expectations.   Be sure to get malaria prevention travel meds before going to the Kurger area during mosquito season.

Hi,

South Africa is a great place for a safari and you can easily do so in many of the game parks in the country. My recommendation would be the world famous Kruger National Park. You can easily fly from Cape Town to Nelpruit airport (MPQ) and you are within 45 minutes of the Park.

Kruger has an amazing network of tarred and dirt roads and they sell a detailed map of all the camps, waterholes, distances etc. Doing a self-drive safari is a wonderfuk experience and you can easily do guided safaris with the guides at the camps.

You can stay inside the park or in a place like Hazyview that is 10 minutes from the Phabeni Gate. Hazyview offers easy access to supermarkets, restaurants and the Panorama Route featuring the Blyde River Canyon (third largest in the world).

There are also all inclusive private reserves next to Kruger that offer a personalized, more luxurious safari so your travel style and budget will dictate how you spend your time there.

Let me know if I can be helpful in any way.

Cheers,

Heeten

That's good info.  You can also fly into Hoedspruit if that's more convenient.

Nelspruitt is a nice town.   We stayed there a couple of nights after leaving the park area.   We have a friend whose family is from Nelspruitt and we met up with them.

Kenya and South Africa do offer very different wildlife viewing experiences and I can't say which one is better than other because they are different.    However in my opinion, South Africa has a better infrastructure, the roads are good and well sign-posted making it easier to hire a car and self-drive, which particularly as there is a group of you is very cost effective   There are a couple of interesting sites for South Africa and Kenya safary:   http://www.lavacanza.in/sightseeing-tour/South-Africa-Tours/Safaris/d11-c9-s37   http://www.lavacanza.in/sightseeing-tour/Kenya-Tours/Safaris/d801-c9-s37
