Jhoncarter, people usually fly into Istanbul or take a ferry from the Greek Islands to the Mediterranean coast. Then they typically confine themselves to the western half of the country, exploring the ancient sights of the coastal region and the stone chimneys around Goreme in Cappadocia. Those would probably be the "greatest hits," although the country is very charming in many other ways.

First, what your interests?  Feeling adventurous?  How much time do you have?  What time of year are you going?

Turkey is an immense country and is not limited to the western portion.  While western Turkey is more secular and tourist-oriented, the rest of the country is conservative but nonetheless welcoming to tourists.

Dynamic and culturally-rich Istanbul is not to be missed.  Areas like Sultanahmet and the bazaars are quite touristy.  But it’s easy to get off the beaten path by taking the ferry to the Asian side or a tram to the northern Bosphorus.  Neighborhoods like Beyoglu, Galata, Karakoy and Cihangir are full of character.

In the summertime (as well as late spring/early autumn), a gullet cruise along the southern Turquoise Coast is also a good way of seeing archaeological sites, small towns, and enjoying hiking and swimming as well.

If you’re keen on seeing traditional Turkey, flights from IST go to Mardin in southeast Anatolia.  Here you are on the former plains of Mesopotamia and life feels like it has not changed in millennia.  Historic mosques, monasteries and forts line the dramatic hillside town with views towards Syria.  Another city in the region, Sanliurfa or Urfa (a 3-hour bus ride from Mardin), has excellent museums, mosaic ruins, a great bazaar, and is a pilgrimage site to Abraham's birthplace.  A daytrip to Harran brings you to a village of unique beehive-shaped houses similar to the trulli in Alberobello, Italy.

Good luck!

Pamukkale.......formations of calcium deposits is also an amazing site to see & of course the Roman ruins.....Would love to go again. Took the Tour of Turkey with Cosmos in Mar/13. This was preceeded by a tour of Egypt so it is difficult not to compare them. Accomodations were adequate but not superior. Too much time spent on buses (2 full days of just travel!), but we were covering a very large area (about 1/4 of Turkey). Sites we saw were impressive. Loads of history here! Aegean coast and Istanbul were fantastic! We stayed 2 extra days in Istanbul at the end and it was well worth it there is so much to see and do there. Must do is the turkish bath but plan for at least 3 hours of relaxation, and do the whole ball of wax!! Another must see (we went here two days) are the grand bazaar and spice market. Also Dolmabache palace. Pass on the optional turkish folk dance nite in Cappadocia - the food & drink (included in the price) were putrid! No time for individual exploration which was a downer. People were friendly and helpful, food was great, but same almost everywhere (take your own tea and coffee!) Tour group was too big (42) but helped keep the price down I guess. Worth the trip to see such a marvelous country but could easily be travelled on one's own rather than on an organized tour (would be easy to drive yourself between cities), however would lose the extensive knowledge of the guide. I'd go later in the spring as we hit some very cold weather in Gallopolli (an area I'd bypass unless I had a particular interest in world war history), and it would be prettier if the fruit trees were in bloom. Would've liked to have gone to the mediterranean coast instead. Pammukale and Cappadocia were amazing! Make sure you pick up plenty of Evil Eye protectors, and please try the simit, an awesome sesame bagel!!!

Turkey is really almost two different countries.  East Turkey is more historical and consevative.  If you like history you will love East Turkey.   West Turkey is not as conservative but still historical with some more modern activities.  My wife and I did back to back 3 week tours of each and loved them both for which each one had to offer.  We like to take small group tours that are unique and not like the big tour companies offer.  We found one that only takes 10 to 12 people and only goes a few times a year.  We go to different countries each year and imurse ourselves into the culture and Turkey stands as one of the top places to visit.
