Fall Foliage

by regina77004 »

I'm trying to put together a trip for this fall the second week of October.  It looks like Verymont is the best area for early October.. Is that correct? If so, where do you recommend flying into? Where to base? What towns to hit?  We also love the mountains, so I'm thinking speding some time around White Mountains.  Thank you in advance.

Vermont has the widest variety of trees, especially of the type that turn glorious colors come autumn. Generally the colors peak around Columbus Day weekend, but you never know. A lot depends on how rainy the summer is and how quickly it gets cold in the fall. Yankee Magazine has an excellent foliage website with lots of information. As for where to base yourself: I have a fondness for Woodstock, VT, a picture perfect New England town, down to the white steepled church. That being said, it will book up months in advance of foliage season, so make your reservations soon. The White Mountains are also beautiful--a bit craggier and more rustic than Vermont's rolling hills and groovy new age communities. I hope this helps!
