Colonial Williamsburg is a great place to spend a day, with another day for some of the sights around there like Yorktown and Jamestown. The so called historic triangle. Great restaurants in that city.
Many people like nearby Fredericksburg, which is a charming small place with a lot of Civil War History.
If you have enough time for the trip, there's nothing quite like a visit to Charlottesville and Jefferson's Monticello. The region is also now famous for its wine and you could spend a day touring vineyards.
If you're interested my blog has details and lots of photos on all of these places: http://drfumblefinger.com/wrdprs/blog/category/aall/north-america/southeastern-usa/virginia/
