Monterey Bay Aquarium

886 Cannery Row Monterey, California

TYPE: Zoo/Aquarium Zoo/Aquarium
AGE: All Ages

Aquariums and zoos are a wonderful place for kids to learn, and many provide educational opportunities for young visitors. Although learning is the aim, kids will also take away the memory of coming nose to nose with a toothy shark, a giant giraffe, or some fanciful creature that will delight and awe. It's always good to bring a camera; you never know when a priceless moment of discovery may occur.

Yes, it's huge, with more than 350,000 marine animals and plants on display, and it has two truly awesome big tanks -- the million-gallon Open Sea exhibit, populated by yellowfin tuna, large green sea turtles, barracuda, sharks, giant ocean sunfish, and schools of bonito; and the three-story Kelp Forest with its stunning view of leopard sharks and other sea creatures. But what is truly striking is how this facility's displays highlight the sheer beauty of sea creatures -- the feathery flutter of jellyfish, the supple grace of rays, the quicksilver flash of anchovies, sardines, and mackerel swimming in massive schools.
