The Winner

Photographer: Julie Hughes, San Francisco, CA.

Destination: Erg Chebbi Dunes, Morocco

Prize: A $1,000 Barnes & Noble Gift Card and her photo on the cover of Frommer's Morocco

The Story:
"My sister and I were on a three-week vacation in fabulous Morocco. We had arranged for a camel ride out into the Sahara Desert at Erg Chebbi to watch the sunset."

"From the back of the camel, riding into the desert, the waves in the sand created by blowing winds were especially attractive. I was seeing the desert from the camel's perspective, looking ahead to the distant horizon. The light on the dunes was beautiful even though we were hours away from sunset. The dunes spring up suddenly from flat desert, and look as though they could go on forever. The dunes seem timeless to me; this photo could have been taken 1,000 years ago or 1,000 years in the future."

Runners Up

Photographer: Andy Glogower, Winter Haven, FL

Destination: Clearwater Beach, FL

Andy's Story:
"My wife and I decided to take our daughters to Clearwater Beach for the weekend as sort of a farewell before our middle daughter heads off to college. We were staying at a great hotel just across from the beach. We spent an amazing morning and early afternoon on the beach before some torrential storms forced us back to the hotel. I was hoping the rains would ease up to offer up a nice sunset. Our hopes were answered as we had some pretty cool cloud formations and it all seemed to work well with the life guard shack in the foreground. "

Photographer: Mark Adams, O'Fallon, MO

Destination: Antelope Canyon, Arizona

Mark's Story:
"The photo was taken on my honeymoon. We went out to Arizona to get married on the Navajo Reservation with a Navajo Ceremony. For my wedding present, my wife booked me an all-day photographer's tour of Antelope and the surrounding canyons with Carol Bigthumb. As it turned out, I was the only person scheduled for the day, so basically, had my own personal guide for the day. I have wanted to go there for quite some time, but was never able to afford the trip. So with the wedding, rolled it all into one."

"Antelope Canyon is a beautiful area, but can be hard to photography, with the changing light conditions. It is all so really tough on equipement. The blowing sand gets into everything. Even with the camera and lens wrapped in plastic, I am still going to have to send the lens off to be cleaned."
Photographer: Michael McCrery, LaGrange, IL

Destination: Zermatt, Switzerland

Michael's Story:
"We went to Zermatt to ski, and were told to take a picture of the Matterhorn if we saw it, because it is often extremely cloudy there and you may not see it again. We were there for a week and had blue bird days every day. The proprietor of our hotel didn't want us to leave -- he said we brought the good weather. I always look for something to make the photograph more interesting and somewhat unique, and had to nearly lay down in the snow to capture the ancient cabin in the foreground and the Matterhorn in the distance."

Photographer: Erin Goldberger , Brooklyn, NY

Destination: Rome, Italy

Erin's Story:
"En route to Sicily to visit my mother's relatives, we stopped in Rome for several days. As a photographer it was imperative that I capture the vibrant colors of the streets of Rome as well as the people, food, and everything else. Growing up with a car enthusiast father, I have also had a strong connection with photographing cars, specifically older models."

"While exploring the endless passages of Rome with my mother on an extremely muggy August afternoon, I spotted what I can only describe as a 'gem' and snapped this quickly before any one walked by or the car was gone. Since it is 35mm, I didn't see the results until several weeks later, but this was certainly the highlight of the roll and definitely a perfect representation of the amazing city."

The Contest

Back in early June we asked readers to submit their favorite travel shots to our cover photo contest. They responded with over 10,000 uploads, and choosing the best ones took our judges a little longer than we expected.

The winner is Julie Hughes. She will receive a $1,000 Barnes & Noble Gift Card and see her image on the cover of the forthcoming Frommer's Morocco book. Ensley Eikenburg, Associate Publisher of Frommer's guidebooks said, "Ms. Hughes photo captures everything we look for in a cover photo -- an intriguing sense of place, eye-catching composition, a sense of surprise, and a very strong you-are-there quality."
