Dubrovnik, Croatia

Little more than 15 years ago, the 900-year-old city of Dubrovnik was being shelled by Yugoslavian troops during the Croatian War of Independence -- a fact you'll find almost impossible to believe today as you stroll the idyllic harbor and old town in the company of thousands of other cruise ship passengers. Strange but true: The beautiful old city (so beautiful it's included on UNESCO's World Heritage List) has bounced back from war to become one of the most popular ports on the Mediterranean/Adriatic run. But who can question why? It has an enviable position on the blue sea, with medieval ramparts surrounding ancient streets and historic architecture, and a surrounding countryside that remains redolent of old-world living.

Our two favorite activities are walking the Placa (also called Stradun) and the side streets of Old Town (which has remained virtually unchanged since the 13th c.), and taking a ride in the country. Shore excursions are offered to the pretty Konavle Valley.

Coming Ashore in Dubrovnik:

Big ships dock in a suburb of Dubrovnik, at Gruz Harbor, about 15 minutes by taxi or bus from the Old Town. Smaller ships can anchor right in the beautiful Old Harbor, in the heart of the old city.

Getting Around in Dubrovnik:

Taxis are usually available at the pier. Complimentary shuttle buses to Old Town are usually provided by the cruise lines. Public buses that stop at the pier are a third option.
