Best Place to Test Your Wit: Once a month, D.C. Improv (1140 Connecticut Ave. N. W.; tel. 202/296-7008) hosts a no-cover-charge "Happy Hour Trivia Night," during which patrons can create value with their worthless knowledge: Tab discounts and free chips and salsa go to the top three teams.

Best Place to Feel History: Catch a show at America's most infamous showplace. The newly renovated Ford's Theatre (511 10th St. NW; tel. 202/347-4833) presents a number of performances, some of which are free, including the Living Lincoln series. Tours of the historic site are also free, though admission to the theater and the tours require tickets

Best Place to Live JFK's Vision: The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (2700 F St.; tel. 202/467-4600) is the inspirational president's living memorial, fulfilling his dream of bringing the best of the arts to the masses. Free nightly shows on the Millennium Stage dazzle audiences.

Best Place to Smile: The National Zoo (3001 Connecticut Ave. NW; tel. 202/633-4240) is the perfect place to share a day with our fellow earthlings. Some 2,000 animals of 400 different species, including the giant panda, live here.

Best Place to Embrace the Present: If Washington D.C.'s incessant tribute to the past proves too much, head for Rock Creek Park's Carter Barron Amphitheatre (3545 Williamsburg Ln. NW; tel. 202/895-6000). The outdoor venue's annual lineup includes free shows that provide a great respite from the city.
