The new year is already off to a flying start thanks to some of our favorite discount airlines. The usual suspects are making it easier to get to sunny destinations, and a couple of the big boys are fiddling with reducing their fares.
You could start the new year with a trip to Seville, Mexico City, or Moscow. Or you could save airfare and sample a little of each and more on domestic soil with a long weekend in New York.
January is a typically slow month for travel. Holiday splurges have emptied wallets and people are a tad road weary. This is all good news for travelers though, as tour operators are lowering package deals as incentive to lure globe hoppers to warm locations and large resorts.
Last night, I did something I wouldn't recommend. And I may not be coming home. I flew on US Airways from New York to Las Vegas. I'm supposed to fly back on Sunday. Tomorrow, Jan. 6, US Airways will hear from labor unions and a judge about whether they can slash salaries and pensions enough to keep running.

From Christopher Ossana: "We fell in love with Thailand on our first trip there two Januarys ago and spent all of last summer planning our return to Bangkok and Chiang Mai. We are due to depart for Bangkok January 13th and are wondering if there are others out there in a the same emotionally awkward situation -- conflicted, distraught, and heartbroken about the past week's news, but also not completely convinced that canceling our plans is the best response. We're also uncertain, as things are unfolding daily, about whether or not it is entirely safe or even appropriate to go."
From Corcovado: "Just got back from a repeat trip to Drake Bay, which is really one of the most amazing places in the amazing country of Costa Rica. Thought I'd post information on a new independent tour operator there that can be very helpful setting up activities in Drake Bay, and giving advice on the whole Osa Peninsula area. Many hotels in Drake Bay have internal guides and tours available, but sometimes the other guests don't want to do the activities you do, so having an independent operator is a great addition to the area."
From Karen Baker: "We just returned from a four-night mini-vacation to Amsterdam, booked through Gate 1. It was an unbeatable price and a fantastic trip! We researched the hotels offered in the package and were very happy with our choice (Rembrandt Residence). The Gate 1 folks were helpful and responsive before we left; they asked for our feedback after we returned, as well. We will use Gate 1 again."
From paulhoeymakers: "Hey, I am a Dutch boy and will be visiting Louisville in January. Can anyone give me some tips about sights to see? I'm also planning to rent a car and go to Nashville."
From Steph Blumensaat: "My husband and I spent the first 7 days of December in Paris and loved it! We stayed in the Libertel Austerlitz. It was a 2** hotel that we purchased in a package with www.gotoday.com. I found this company through Frommers website and magazine. They have incredibly affordable air/hotel packages. We couldn't even come close to matching it anywhere else."
