The recent outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome has dealt another blow to an already-wobbly airline industry. Some carriers are reducing schedules and offering greater flexibility in changing your travel plans. Here's what you need to know.
Okay, so the World Health Organization is telling people to stay away from Hong Kong. But Asia's a big continent, with plenty of fascinating destinations. Hurting from the war and from the SARS scare, airlines are trying to drum up business to Asia right now--so you can find some fabulous fares.
April typically heralds showers, flowers and airfares to Europe going through the roof. So we were thrilled to see Aer Lingus' "A Thousand Welcomes" promotion, good from now through April 21.
The posh Lansdowne Resort in Northern Virginia's fashionable Loudoun County is having another of its successful Food & Wine Camp Weekends twice monthly this summer, and you can rough it (not!) for just $925 for two people.
You say you want to travel to some place far, far away? But you don't want to leave the country? From Christopher Jackson: "Is it still true that one can walk up to the cruise docks, carry-on in hand and negotiate for a great price for a cruise? Thinking of trying this in Ft. Lauderdale or Miami. Anybody with recent success using this money saving tactic? Some specifics here, if you would. How do you so it? Who do you speak with? Cash in hand? Looking at a three or four night cruise."
From Melod¿a Violeta: "We would like to invite you to meet some locals in Buenos Aires. We are a group of people who practice English every Friday at a coffee shop in Buenos Aires. It's an easy going and informal meeting, free, just for pleasure. We like to chat about ordinary things but traveling is our favorite subject. We would like you to visit us, drink coffee, and have a conversation in English."
From AM Hayne: "My husband & I will be traveling in London, Bath, & the Cotswolds in a few weeks with our children (6 & 8). We would like to eat in pubs on occasion, but have heard that they generally are not kid friendly. Any insights and/or words of wisdom?"
From Judy Mayer: "Any suggestions on Bed and Breakfast places in the capital city? Will be there in mid-Sept. Also I want to take a long tour one day. Golden Circle? or to Snaefellsnes?"
From cork cary: "We arrived at the train station in Rome & one of the men selling rooms offered his place, Daphne Bed & Breakfast ¿ private bath for $80 a night right in the center of the city. We arrived at Daphne & the place was very nice and clean. We paid for our three nights upfront, as they requested, and had a good night¿s sleep. The next morning we left the room to go sightseeing. We returned to find our bags packed and the owner waiting for us. He told us they had an overbooking & he had to find us another place."
