Union Dues: "New" Europe Cheaper than "Old"
Starting tomorrow, ten countries in eastern Europe and the Mediterranean will join the European Union, becoming equal (in theory, at least) to such stalwarts as France, Germany and the UK. Eight of the ten are former Communist-bloc countries and have long been havens for budget travelers. We fear their low prices and cheap labor are not long for this world. Now is the time for all good budgeteers to come to the aid of their pocketbooks and sign up for still-moderately priced vacations while they last. more>

Get Intra-Spective: Minor Fares to Major European Cities
As cheap Europe fares fade into the warmth of summer, consolidator Intratours is doing their best to provide a last gasp of cheap fares for May. Their low fares are also available for early-birds planning September and October trips, though, so don't despair if you can't get the vacation days right now. more>

Hidden Caribbean: Marie-Galante
Ann Geracimos recounts her recent trip to this little visited Caribbean island. more>

Double the Pleasure with this Hertz Promotion
What's better than savings? Double savings. That's the philosophy Hertz is promoting with their new Double Take program, which turns little coupons into slightly bigger coupons. more>

US Airways Gets Sensible with Philly Fares
Oh, Philadelphians. You guys are so lucky. The battle between Southwest and US Airways for your hearts and minds has now created more than just fare sales -- it's caused a real change in the way US Airways prices flights. more>

Washingtonians Unite for Free Tickets!
If you're near DC or visit the nation's capital often, you're in for a treat. United Airlines is giving away free tickets to anyone who flies two roundtrips to or from DC within the next year. Fly more, get better free tickets -- up to an around-the-world ticket for road warriors who fly 12 roundtrips. more>

Find Europe Anew in the Azores
If Europe seems old hat to you, imagine the Azores. They're a chain of nine islands floating in the mid-Atlantic, owned roughly for the past 500 years by Portugal. Quiet, peaceful, beautiful and surrounded by great fishing, they're a forgotten corner of Europe where time goes by very slowly and tourists are few and far between. more>

Edinburgh Tips from Recent Trip
From McPack: "Our family of four, includging two teens, just got back from a trip to Great Britain (London for four days, Edinburgh for three). I wanted to add some tips regarding Edinburgh, as London is well represented here. We stayed at a B&B that was great, the Aonach Mor Guest House. Check out TripAdvisor.com for comments. There is an express bus from the Airport to Princes Street. Take it, it's great and cheap. Edinburgh has a great bus system, but no tube. Princes Street is the hub in the city, and you can get anywhere from there." more>

Iceland Is the Next Hotspot
From Ed Schlenk: "Iceland may be the ultima Thule, but it is actually quite accessible, even to budget travelers, thanks to some of Icelandair's packages. I just returned from a short but action-packed stay there. My experiences may be useful to those adventuresome travelers hoping to see Iceland some day. I apologize if some of the following information has changed or if some of my observations seem a bit biased." more>

Travel Security Against Lost Documents
From Elliot R.: "I had everything stolen in Madrid a couple of years ago-airline tickets, credit cards, passports, etc. I recently scanned all of our credit cards, front & back + our passports + our airline tickets. I put the resulting "pictures" into 3 Microsoft Word files (found on most computers througout the world). I put these documents (as well as copies of our hotel vouchers, etc.) onto a USB Flash Drive which I plan to keep in a safe place when we travel. If you have access to your email via the internet-You could also attach the documents to an email and send it to yourself (but don't open it!). Then-if anything should get lost or stolen-you have copies of everything handy on the pen drive or you can access the info from the internet." more>

Tour Operators Changing Airlines
From LKessler: "A friend booked a trip to Africa with a very well known operator which had a direct flight (which she very much wanted) to Johannesburg, overnight there and then the next morning on to Victoria Falls. After the deposit was down she was told the airline and routing had changed. They were to fly overnight to London, be put up in a 'day hotel' at the airport, then board another overnight flight to Johannesburg and immediately board a plane for Victoria Falls. Has anyone else experience such a radical change? Any suggestions?" more>

Pack a Wash Cloth
From D Belk: "One thing I'd suggest to take along is a wash cloth. For some reason you won't find them (my experience) in either London or Paris hotels. They are pretty small and light. We take two each for my wife and myself. That gives a day for the last one used to be rinsed and dried." more>
