The magic of India can be found on its railroads, in its rivers, in its deep beliefs, on its beaches and in its hills. One of the largest and most densely populated countries in the world, it's no surprise that it holds the majestic castles of the Raj, the colonial architecture of the British West Indies, the omnipotent presence of the Taj Mahal, the tranquility of the Dali Lama at Daram Sala, the street smells of Calcutta, and the nights of Mumbai and Goa.
In May, cinema elite and a constellation of stars hit Cannes for the biggest, most glamorous film festival of the year. The new fashions hit the Croissette. The casinos of nearby Monte Carlo start to fill up with socialites and travelers flocking to area for one of its biggest months of the year. Surprisingly, there are deals to be had for peak season.
Here is a selection of some of the most unique homegrown festivals and events worthy of a visit this season.
The District of Columbia was designed as a showpiece to rival the greatest European capitals and built to embody the ideals of the enlightenment in the which the nation was conceived. With sprawling avenues, large parks and wide swaths of greenery, classically inspired buildings to house the government, and monuments dedicated to its great architects of ideas, the district is never short on sights.

From Megan G: "Through the NO Convention and Visitor's Bureau website I found the PowerPassCard. For $60 (the one-day pass), I can choose from a slough of activities and tours I planned to do anyway free of admission. I searched Frommer's and another site for information and to find other travelers who've used the PowerPassCard, but didn't find anything. Have any of you heard of it?"
From winelover: "I just wanted to let you know that I read your description of Cedar Gables Inn in Napa Valley and booked my husband and me for several days. It was better than you described. Susie and Ken were incredible. They really took care of us."
From Bar bar a: "Don't overlook using local tourist offices. They will help you find accomodations that meet your price range or other specifications, even for walk-ins. Or reach them ahead of time by finding them on local websites produced by the European equivalent of the Chamber of Commerce."
From Elizabeth Davis: "I cannot seem to find any mileage charts that list the miles from Johannesburg to Victoria Falls. We will be ending our tour in Johannesburg and would like to rent a car and drive to Victoria Falls. Does anyone know any info on this? Good roads? Safe? How long is the drive?"
From Caroled: "MBNA has just announced it is increasing its foreign transaction fee to 3%. Any suggestions for a good fee with lower fee?"
