The country might be on the small side, but there are plenty of things to do in a country rich in native culture and blessed with natural resources including a beautiful coastline, the nearby Galapagos Islands, great mountain regions, rain forests of the great Amazon River, and the most popular Indian outdoor market in all of South America.
Slovenia packs in an intense variety of landscape and culture at a reasonable price, especially if you like biking, hiking, skiing or driving. And it's close enough to Italy -- less than five hours from Venice by train -- to make a great add-on trip if you don't want to make it a journey of its own.
Home to six hundred horses, unspoiled beaches and the famous but by all accounts fictitious peaches that Kramer rapturously described and coveted on Seinfeld, Mackinac Island is an eight-mile long island with only five hundred permanent residents, located in the center of the Great Lakes waterway.
The perception used to be that Hong Kong and Southeast Asia were as far away and as costly as a trip to Mars. While it doesn't look as if space travel is getting any easy or more affordable, Hong Kong has come way down in price as package deals and short tours of China's citadel of capitalism become more accessible.
