How Do You Transfer/Store Photos from a Digital Camera

Does anyone have experience in emptying the memory chip so that you can take more photos? I have a 256 mb flash drive and would like to download the extra pictures to that for storage. Once there, I would drive to Washington DC, pick up my husband at the airport and take an East Coast driving tour, up to Boston, over to Canada, through Toronto, then back to Michigan.
