Airfare Deals and News for the Week of December 4, 2009In this week's roundup of budget deals from airlines: SAS makes Scandinavia cheaper this season, American says hello to Belize for a bargain, and Virgin America, Alaska, and AirTran let you see the U.S. for less. Alaska Airlines' (tel. 800/426-0333; www.alaskaair.com) Winter Sale is good for travel from January 5 through March 10, Monday-Thursday, as well as Saturday. Tickets require a 14-day advance purchase, with exception to Mexico, where no advance purchase is needed. Blackout dates are February 11, 12, and 15 for most markets, though dates vary for travel to/from Mexico, Vancouver, Victoria, and Dutch Harbor. Book by December 7. Fares include:
AirTran Sale Through March AirTran (tel. 800/AIR-TRAN; www.airtran.com) current sale is valid for travel through March 10, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. Fares require a 10-day advance purchase, and all bookings must be made by 11:59pm ET, December 10. Steer clear of the following blackout dates (and yes, they include major holidays): December 18-20, 22-30, January 2, 3, February 12, 13, 15, 20, and 21.
Virgin America's Cyber Monday Sale Virgin America's (tel. 877/359.8474; www.virginamerica.com) Cyber Monday Sale is good for travel from December 3 through May 23, with fares starting at $39 each way. Tickets require a 3-day advance purchase, and must be booked by 11:59pm, December 8. Blackout dates include: December 18, 19, 26, 27, January 1, 3, February 12, and 15.
Hong Kong Winter Sale Cathay Pacific's (tel. 800/233-2742; www.cathaypacific.com) Deal of the Month is good for travel from LA, San Fran, and New York to Hong Kong. Fares are just $815 round-trip from all three departure cities, and that includes taxes and fees. This deal is good for departures Monday through Thursday, from January 11 through February 28, with a maximum stay of 30 days. Flights on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday will cost an additional $25 per sector. All fares must be booked by 11:59pm PST, December 31.
Belize Sale from American Airlines Everytime American Airlines (tel. 800/433-7300; www.aa.com) launches a sale to Belize, we feel obliged to mention that it's not as good as the now legendary sale of fall '08, when seats were going for as little as $154 round-trip with taxes. Who knows when/if we'll see fares like that again. But we do know that Belize tends to be one of the priciest spots to fly into in all of Central America, and American Airlines frequently offers some of the most affordable fares to Belize City. Their latest sale to BZE is good for winter travel, Mondays through Thursdays, from January 1 through March 31. Tickets require a Saturday night stay, and allow a max stay of 120 days. All fares must be booked by 11:59pm CT, December 22.
Scandinavia on Sale for Winter SAS (tel. 800-221/2350; www.flysas.com) has some great deals on winter travel from the U.S. to Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki, and other Scandinavian cities, starting at $470 round-trip, before taxes. We even featured one particular route as our Fare of the Day on the Airfarewatchdog blog recently: Honolulu to Stockholm for $684 round-trip, including taxes! This sale is good for travel from January 11 through March 25, and tickets must be booked by December 7. Fares include:
