Deals to Germany for Summer & Fall

Even as domestic coast-to-coast fares remain pricey, there's hope yet for those looking to make the trip to Europe. Fares to Germany have held steady in the $600-$700+ range from New York and other departure cities, even during peak summer months.

And if you'd prefer to wait out the summer crowds (and higher hotel rates), you'll find plenty of great fares for fall travel. Even for nonstops from the West Coast! For travel elsewhere in Europe or even Israel and North Africa, you may find it is often cheaper to fly into Germany and "DIY " a flight onward, what with so many low-cost carriers operating from German hubs. Sites like WhichBudget.com can help you string together an itinerary on the cheap. We also like the Special Offers listings on Air Berlin (tel. 866/266-5588; www.airberlin.com), which recently souped up service from the West Coast to include Las Vegas and Los Angeles. The Special Offers listings allow you to search current sales by destination categories, such as Honeymoon, Winter & Sun, Snow, etc., and regularly feature deals we rarely see from the U.S. to places like Palma de Mallorca, Sharm el Sheik, and Tel Aviv.

From the Mailbag: Sit Anywhere You Like, Just Not Together

Q: I have noticed the last few times I have booked flights they don't have seats for my husband and me to sit together. Is this something new? How can I book flights online and make sure we can sit together?

A: Read on.
