With the U.S. dollar at a historical low against the Euro, you'd think that Europe would be the last place American travelers would be looking to go -- but no, Europe is definitely on the menu. In their own small way, the airlines are helping compensate for the low dollar with a slew of airfare bargains to get you there. It seems that everyone had a new year's European destination airfare sale, many of which are now over, but there are still a few to entice you.

Swiss International Air Lines (tel. 877/359-7947; www.swiss.com) has a wide selection of discounted round-trip fares for travel between now and March 31, 2007. The only catch is that you have to spend a Saturday night away and the nicest part is the advertised prices include all fees and charges. Sample round-trip fares include:

  • New York to Zurich $439
  • New York to Barcelona $485
  • Boston to Berlin $495
  • Boston to Amsterdam $548
  • Chicago to Madrid $585
  • Chicago to Malaga $585
  • Los Angeles to Nice $631
  • Los Angeles to Brussels $633
  • Miami to Geneva $650
  • Miami to London $659

Austrian Airlines (tel. 800/843-0002; www.aua.com/us/eng) is offering winter flight specials to Europe from Washington DC and New York. Book by January 31 and travel by February 15, 2007 to take advantage of these round-trip fares from either city (taxes are additional):

  • To Budapest $400
  • To Prague $403
  • To Warsaw $431
  • To Milan $445
  • To Vienna $451

Continental Airlines (tel. 800/231.0856; www.continental.com) wants to take you to Germany for less this winter and early spring. To get these low fares purchase your ticket at least seven days in advance of departure, travel outbound between now and March 30, 2007, include a Saturday night stay and complete all travel by April 29, 2007. Taxes are additional on these round-trip fares (based on a round-trip purchase):

  • Newark to Hamburg, Frankfurt or Berlin $378
  • Chicago or Washington DC to Cologne $482
  • Chicago or Detroit to Cologne $532
  • Tampa to Frankfurt $532
  • San Diego to Cologne $636

Aer Lingus (tel. 800/474/7424; www.flyaerlingus.com) can get you to Ireland for less this winter. Travel from January 13 until February 28, 2007 for these round-trip fares:

  • New York to Dublin or Shannon $298
  • Boston to Dublin or Shannon $298
  • Chicago to Dublin or Shannon $298
  • Los Angeles Dublin or Shannon $358 (January 17 to February 14, 2007)

Fares must be booked by January 19, 2007 and taxes are additional.

Travelocity (tel. 888/872.8356; www.travelocity.com) has teamed up with Alitalia to bring you post-holiday round-trip airfares to Italy that will make you think the holiday gifts are still coming. Tickets must be purchased by January 15, 2007 and are good for travel through February 28, 2007. A Saturday night stay is required with a maximum of one month stay allowed.

Sample round-trip fares (plus taxes) are:

  • Boston to Rome, Bologna or Pisa $469
  • New York to Rome, Pisa, Naples, Genoa, Florence, Verona or Ancona $479

Air France (tel. 800/237-2747; www.airfrance.us) features special one-way winter fares to France and beyond that must be purchased by January 15, 2007. Taxes of between $80 and $150 are additional but fuel surcharges are included in the quoted prices. A Saturday night stay is required and the maximum stay s one month. Travel is valid through March 31, 2007.

Delta (tel. 800/241-4141; www.delta.com) has a sale on just three European destination sectors for purchase by January 16, 2007.

One-way fares featured are:

  • Atlanta to Shannon (Ireland) $319
  • New York to Amsterdam $189
  • New York to Istanbul $289

There are a few conditions including the fact that travel must begin by March 31, 2007 and be completed by April 30, 2007, fares shown are valid for travel Monday through Thursday, while higher fares apply Friday through Sunday, seven-day advance purchase is required and so is a Saturday night.

The following blackout dates apply:

  • From Istanbul: From now until January 28, 2007
  • To Shannon: April 10 to 20, 2007
  • From Shannon: March 30 to April 10, 2007

For discounted airfare with your hotel package thrown in, Vacation Europe (tel. 800/780-2202; www.vacationeurope.com) has extended its winter specials for travel between now and March 31, 2007. You must book by January 20, 2007 and all packages include round-trip mid-week airfare, fuel surcharges, hotel taxes and daily breakfast based on double occupancy. Air taxes are additional.
