March 29, 2004 -- May and June might be the ideal times to go to Europe. The weather is mild, the crowds haven't hit their July height, and fares are lower than they are in midsummer. Compelling May and June fares continue to appear on our radar, so we'll keep passing them on to you.

We reported on Auto Europe's great fly-drive packages to France last week, and they've since followed up with packages to other European destinations. The star of the show is a $287 (plus tax, per person, for two) package including flights from New York to Brussels, three days' car rental any time during your trip and a cell phone, good for flights between May 15 and June 15. This is a terrific fare.

Their other rates aren't half-bad either, even after the $100 or so per person in taxes that needs to be added to all European fares. Other than the NYC-Brussels fare, they all apply on flights from April 1 through May 31, and include three days with a tiny car and a cell phone for the duration of your journey. Book by March 31, and you get an automatic upgrade from a tiny car to a slightly-less-tiny car.

Single travelers can't get these fares, but groups of two or more can (as the prices are based on splitting the cost of the car.) Still, singles should call Auto Europe at 888/835-1555 to see what they can do for you. Prices include:

US Airways Brings Back Great Scotland Sale

Auto Europe's fares don't cover Scotland, but that's OK, because US Airways has brought back their sale fares to Glasgow for May. The fares below are on sale through April 9 for trips between May 10-30 or between September 2 and October 21. Even if Edinburgh is your final destination, you'll probably save quite a bit of money flying into Glasgow, which is only an hour away from Scotland's capital. The fares here are especially good for folks living in smaller cities:

  • Allentown, Islip, New York City, or Philadelphia: $353
  • Boston or Providence: $393
  • Washington, D.C.: $413
  • Baltimore: $433
  • Harrisburg: $458
  • Charlotte, Pittsburgh or Richmond: $478
  • Greensboro, Nashville, Norfolk or Raleigh: $488

While we can see other airlines matching these fares from New York, Boston or Baltimore (we're thinking specifically of Icelandair's Lucky Fare sales), $458 from Harrisburg is a slam-dunk. To get these fares, you must buy by April 9 online at www.usairways.com/pro/specials/scotlandsale.htm.
