Yes, summer is almost over, but there is some good news for those who may be angling for a quick weekend getaway. We've looked for some good deals to both warm places with beaches -- a stereotypical take on summer -- and some outdoors destinations, too. Keeping in mind that it's a hurricane season that just recently perked up please read the fine print on all of these deals carefully and consider purchasing independent travel insurance if possible.

Expedia (tel. 800/EXPEDIA; has savings for Labor Day weekend, along with other holiday periods, too (Thanksgiving and Christmas). The destinations are limited, but the sale is especially useful for places such as Los Cabos, priced from $82 for hotels and $363 for air plus three nights, or Oahu, Hawaii, from $86 per night or $415 for air plus three nights, based on double occupancy. For those seeking a city getaway, Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Boston are also included in the special. (tel. 800/573-7251; has a Labor Day sale that's actually valid for travel August 27 through September 9, as long as you book by September 3, for hotel stays in places such as Amelia Island, Daytona Beach and Delray Beach, Florida; Anaheim, California, Aruba, Hawaii, Myrtle Beach, the Bahamas, Jamaica, and other coastal and/or resort destinationsin the U.S. and Canada. Beachfront stays are possible in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina (where it's still steamy even in early September), from $89 at the Caravelle Golf and Family Resort; both are available from that price through September 3. Properties such as the Best Western Inn at Amelia Island are available from $109, or go more upscale for the Amelia Island Plantation, from $256. Further north, on Cape Cod, the Four Points by Sheraton Hyannis resort is available from $100, whereas the Crowne Point Historic Inn & Spa is available from $337, and gives you a $50 spa credit. Many of the properties listed have special offers; ten percent off if you stay more than one night, 20 per cent off for three nights, so it's worth reading the fine print.

Last Minute (tel. 866/999-8942;, formerly Site 59, has a few offers for beach destinations. You can depart from Los Angeles, and head to Mazatlan, Mexico, from $542 per person, for round-trip airfare and hotel for August 30 through September 2. Or depart from Los Angeles and fly and stay in Pensacola, Florida, from $536 per person for travel August 30-September 2, or fly to Montana for a last-minute trip to Yellowstone, with flights, rental car, taxes and fees from $519 per person for the same travel period. Other deals include a really quick trip from Atlanta to San Juan Puerto Rico, with flight and hotel priced from $496, for travel Friday September 2 returning two days later, on Sunday.

If your weekend travel takes you to an airport and requires a car, Orbitz (tel. 888-656-4546; has a last-minute car rental sale that's so last minute that it expires on August 26. Rentals start as low as $17 for weekend days from select airports; rates for compacts are available in Edmonton from $17, full size cars available from Knoxville from $35, and compacts are available from Miami from $22. Weekly rates are included in the sale as well.

Pleasant Holidays (tel. 800/742-9244; has some specials that bundle airfare, hotel taxes and three-nights in "pleasant" places, valid for select travel dates through September 5. Travel from Los Angeles to Waikiki, Hawaii, is priced from $315 for airfare and three nights, based on the Ambassador Hotel. More luxurious properties are available, such as the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Resort & Spa, from $745 for three nights.

Rentalo (tel. 877/710-5914;, which lists vacation homes, bed and breakfasts and hotel rooms for rent, has a handful of special offers, including one for the Outer Banks in North Carolina. The price per night at a property described as "The Simplicity" is $125, valid for travel through September 30, with just a one-night minimum stay. It's a four-bedroom, two-bath place that sleeps ten and is located at milepost seven and four blocks from the beach. Or choose a rental property in Kill Devil Hills that sleeps six people for a minimum of three nights, priced at $150 per night, at almost a 20 percent discount, valid for stays through August 30.

Those who like to hike, mountain bike, kayak, swim, or spend summer trips outdoors but not necessarily at beaches might want to take advantage of Travelocity's (tel. 888/872-8356; last-minute deals. The deals are packages to a variety of places, including Jackson Hole, Wyoming; Burlington, Vermont; Salt Lake City, Utah; Rocky Mountains in Colorado; Banff/Lake Louise in Calgary; or Lake Tahoe, Nevada. The trips vary in terms of departure date availability, however Burlington is priced from $326 per person for airfare and hotel, departing from Philadelphia, for two nights during the second weekend of September, but the Rocky Mountains package is roughly based on travel this weekend (August 24-27), starting from $318 per person for Philadelphia departures and two nights.

Travelworm (tel. 888/700-8342; is advertising a deal at the Rosen Shingle Creek in Orlando, starting from $169 per night. Families can stay in a room, and kids under the age of 17 stay for free. The resort is located on more than 200 acres, with four pools, a spa, a championship golf course, tennis courts, volleyball, and access to canoeing, kayaking and horseback riding -- reservations required. For those interested in going to nearby theme parks such as SeaWorld and Universal Orlando is complimentary. The booking deadline is September 7 and the special is valid for stays through September 12. Rooms have amenities such as flat screen televisions, mini-refrigerators, and high-speed Internet access. Rosen Shingle Creek is just one of many resort properties that Travelworm is featuring in Orlando; in fact, the company is having a sizable sale on Florida destinations right now; the booking deadline is September 7.
