Whether it's a last-minute travel deal or a mid-week or long weekend specials, travelers can take advantage of plenty of money-saving options for touring within the United States. From single-city packages to sweeping road trips in luxury motor coaches to boat rides under Niagara Falls, America the beautiful is only a flight away.
Southwest Vacations (tel. 800/243-8372; www.southwestvacations.com) combines low airfare with top-level accommodations to provide short vacations to such destinations as Las Vegas, Washington, D.C. and Disney World. Its Las Vegas package available from several U.S. cities needs to be booked by February 1, 2007 for travel good from January 15 to March 30, 2007. The package includes roundtrip airfare on Southwest, two nights' accommodations, local service charges and hotel taxes, and twenty-four hour travel assistance. Prices start at $314 out of Baltimore and $304 from Chicago, with accommodations at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino; $254 from Columbus, Ohio at the Stratosphere Casino Hotel and Tower; and $199 from Denver with accommodations at the Flamingo Las Vegas.
Southwest Vacations special savings to Washington, D.C. package includes roundtrip airfare on Southwest, two nights' accommodations and an Old Town Trolley Tour of the city. You need to reserve this trip by February 8, 2007 for travel good from February 1 to March 22, 2007. Sample prices start at $209 from Hartford, CT, with rooms at the Hotel Helix; $399 from Fort Lauderdale at the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel; and $394 out of Tucson and Oakland with accommodations at the Hilton Washington.
Travelocity's (tel. 888/872-8356; www.travelocity.com) last-minute packages are always a great way to city-hop around the United States. In the "Under $250" packages, departing from Birmingham, Alabama, for example, weekend trips that include airfare and hotel available for travel over the next two weekends include Louisville for $201, Cleveland with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for $207, and Nashville for $211. You can book travel for these trips up to one day before travel (based on availability). From Atlanta, available last minute packages with air and hotel include Philadelphia starting at $251, Dallas for $239, and San Francisco for $273. If you want to stay with a friend, these last minute packages can be purchased with just the flight and rental car. Using this option, a trip into New York City costs $251 from Atlanta.
For a motor coach tour of some of America's prettiest locales and highways, Caravan Tours (tel. 800/CARAVAN; www.caravantours.com) has an eight-day, land-only "California Coast and Yosemite Park" motor coach tour that costs $995. This trip takes you through California's wine country, Carmel, Big Sur, Yosemite National Park and Santa Barbara, before finishing up in Beverly Hills. Group sizes on this trip range from 36 to 44 travelers with transportation in a luxury motor coach. Included in the trip are hotels, most meals, all of the activities and sightseeing included in the itinerary, airport transfers in select cities, tips to hotel porters and local guides, as well as the full-time company of a Caravan professional tour guide. Hotels are three or four stars with private baths in each room. Departures for this trip begin on April 1, 2007 and leave often through October 28, 2007. Prices are based on double occupancy travel with a single supplement costing $1,395. Caravan also has an eight-day Grand Canyon trip with similar departure dates costing $995 per person that visits Sedona, Lake Powell, Bryce and Zion.
Get America Tours (tel. 800/594-0025; www.getamericatours.com) has weeklong, multi-day and single-day tours visiting some of America's most-well known sites. The company recently slashed their Internet-only specials offering $50 discounts on selected trips. Its nine-day "Western Highlights" tour visits Northern California, Southern California, Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, and all the sites along the way, and costs $1,199 for double occupancy travel. The trip includes all hotels, entrance fees to all national parks and sites, city tours in L.A., and a full-time tour leader. A similar trip on the East Coast called the "Eastern Panorama" starts in Boston before visiting parts of Canada including Montreal and Toronto before heading to Niagara Falls, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and New York. Prices for this trip start at $1,069 for double occupancy and drop to $979 for triple occupancy. Get America also offers helicopter tours of New York City starting at $84 as well as single-day city tours in Las Vegas, L.A., San Francisco and Orlando. Private tours can also be arranged for small or large groups.
